Detail

“I recall that, countless kalpas ago—as numerous as the sands of the Ganges—there appeared in the world a Buddha named Guanyin.”
— Śūraṅgama Sūtra

Guanyin Bodhisattva, also known as Avalokiteśvara, is the Bodhisattva who perceives the voices and suffering of all sentient beings. Together with Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, Guanyin attends Amitābha Buddha, forming the trio known as the Three Sages of the Western Pure Land.

Across Chinese-speaking communities, Guanyin is perhaps one of the most universally recognized divine figures. From the beloved classic Journey to the West to Buddhist temples and shrines of every scale, images and statues of Guanyin can be found almost everywhere. The gentle, compassionate figure who hears the suffering of the world and comes to the aid of those in need has become deeply rooted in popular culture and spiritual life.

Most surviving sculptures and paintings depict Guanyin as a serene female figure, with gentle features and a softly rounded face. Yet before the Tang dynasty, the compassionate Bodhisattva was predominantly represented in male form.

Originating from India, early Buddhist Bodhisattvas were often portrayed with moustaches, strong physiques, refined facial features, and slender bone structures—reflecting the social ideals and prevailing aesthetics of their time. As Buddhism developed in China and entered the Tang dynasty, people increasingly gravitated toward a softer and more compassionate image, one that resonated more closely with maternal qualities.

Combined with the Tang dynasty’s open and expressive artistic culture, scholars, artisans, and painters were free to envision Guanyin in different forms. Over time, the representation of Guanyin gradually shifted from masculine to feminine.

Musk is traditionally derived from the dried glandular secretion of mature male musk deer. Elusive and mysterious in nature, its scent carries a powerful yet warm presence.

Sandalwood grows exceptionally slowly and remains one of the most important materials used in traditional incense making. Due to widespread illegal harvesting and overexploitation, it has become increasingly precious. Its distinctive aroma is traditionally appreciated for its calming qualities, creating a tranquil atmosphere that encourages the body and mind to gradually unwind.

The 42 incense sticks represent the Forty-Two Stages of the Bodhisattva Path: the Ten Abodes, Ten Practices, Ten Dedications of Merit, Ten Grounds, Equal Enlightenment, and Wonderful Enlightenment.

For this release, Cashonly collaborated with Shan Zhong Xiang, an incense maker with over 30 years of experience. Sandalwood and musk are blended to create a deep, tranquil fragrance, paired with a visual interpretation of Guanyin in a free and formless state.

Together, they form Guanyin Incense—an incense created to evoke serenity, ease, and stillness of body and mind.
