THE CONCEPT — THE ABDUCTION OF PERSEPHONE

As described in the Odyssey, the underworld is a dim and lightless realm. Countless solitary souls wander its endless wastelands in despair, like the walking dead. Hades, the eldest of the three brothers, rules over this barren land. A capable administrator, he neither judges souls arbitrarily nor inflicts punishment without cause. With diligence and precision, he maintains order throughout his realm.

Legend tells of Typhon, a monster defeated by the gods and buried beneath a volcano in Sicily. Whenever he struggles or breathes, his movements cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Over time, these tremors create cracks in the seal placed by the gods, allowing sunlight to enter the underworld through fissures in the earth. Whenever such cracks appear, Hades, the dutiful king of the underworld, goes to inspect them.

One day, another earthquake opened a fissure. As Hades carried out his usual inspection, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, watched him from distant Mount Olympus. Seeing how tirelessly he worked, year after year, yet always alone, she took pity on him and instructed her son Eros to shoot him with an arrow of love.

At that moment, Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, was playing beside a nearby lake. Struck by Eros’s arrow, Hades fell instantly in love with the maiden, whose skin was as white as snow. Her smile, radiant as the spring sun, kindled the love planted in his heart. Enveloped in billowing black smoke and countless spirits, he rose through a fissure in the earth, seized Persephone in his arms, and carried her into the underworld.

When Demeter discovered that her beloved daughter was missing, she searched the world for her. For nine days and nine nights, she searched without sleep or rest. At last, she learned that the other great gods were shielding Hades and his actions, and she fell into despair. The grieving goddess caused the earth to grow ever drier. Grass and flowers withered, people forgot how to cultivate the land, and famine and death spread relentlessly across the human world.

Unable to halt the devastation, Zeus intervened and sent a divine messenger to persuade Hades to return Persephone to Demeter. Before the messenger arrived, however, Hades tricked Persephone into eating four pomegranate seeds. Anyone who ate the food of the underworld would belong to it forever.

Persephone was therefore required to return to the underworld for four months each year. During her absence, life on earth withered beneath bleak, howling winds; flowers, grasses, and trees faded with her departure. When she left the underworld to reunite with her mother, gentle sunlight returned to the earth, and life flourished once more. From then on, the human world knew the four seasons, and Persephone became known as the Goddess of Spring.
